What is Bio-identical HRT and What Are the Advantages?

Every person is unique.  Different women require different dosages, different routes, or different combinations of different hormones in order to manage different symptoms.  A highly trained practitioner is able determine the precise dose and delivery needed for each person.  This is guided by pathology testing.  Your doctor is then able to produce a uniquely personalized prescription for you.   You then take that script to our certified compounding pharmacist who then carefully creates your exact medication.

This is very different to the “standard” medical treatment of hormonal problems.  The standard method used by many GPs, relies on the prescription of synthetic hormones at standard dosages.    Those synthetic hormones are NOT the same as your body produces – they act differently and can produce a range of side effects.  And because it is the same dose for everyone – it may not be matched to your particular situation.

“Bio-Identical” means Identical To Hormones Produced By Your Body – Which Means Less Side Effects Than Synthetic Hormones

The term ‘natural’ when describing natural bio-identical HRT refers to the drug that is used in the preparation of these products.  The progesterone, oestrogen, and DHEA are all derived from either wild yam, clover leaf, soy beans or other plants and herbs.  The drug is extracted and then converted into a bio-identical hormone.

A bio-identical hormone has an identical chemical structure to the hormone that the body produces. This means that its effects are exactly the same as the human derived hormone.  Because the body recognises the natural hormone, you do not get the side effects seen with synthetic hormones.

Most prescription hormones used now are derived from the hormones of pregnant mares, and therefore act similarly in our body, but are not identical.

Others, such as Livial, are synthesised in a laboratory. This is why bio-identical HRT is viewed as the preferred, natural treatment – as the hormones are exactly the same as our own.

We can use the example of sugar to explain further.  Sugar is extracted from sugar cane, a process of crushing the plants and treating them in a factory to extract the pure product.  Sugar is pure and natural, but does not grow on trees.  However, it is very different from saccharine or aspartame, which are synthetic and artificial.  The same analogy applies to bio-identical hormones compared to synthetic hormones.

Precise & Careful Dosages

Another important factor is to tailor the dose exactly to the patient. Every person is unique and a tailored prescription provides optimal therapy compared to standard HRT, which has a “one size fits all” approach.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement – Increasingly Popular Treatment For a Range of Symptoms

Menopause is frequently a challenging time because of the hormone changes and imbalances in your body.  Symptoms can include hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, anxiety, irregular periods, tears, depression, bloating, breast pain and tenderness, fatigue, digestive issues, headaches, aches and pains, vaginal dryness and discomfort, difficulty concentrating and more frequent forgetting, burning tongue and dizziness.  And others.

Symptoms vary from woman to woman.   Some studies show that 60% of women will have mild to moderate symptoms, 20% will have no symptoms, and the remaining 20% may have symptoms so severe it interferes with their daily lives.  Most will reach the menopause between 45 and 55 years, with the average being close to 51 years.

How To Manage Menopause Symptoms

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement (or Supplementation) is one of the most direct paths to reducing these symptoms.  Careful measuring and adjusting of the dose of the hormones in your particular mix is aimed at exactly replacing the hormones your body has begun making less of.  Avoiding synthetic hormones given at the same dose for everyone usually produces a better outcome.

Other ways suggested to reduce the symptoms are:

  • regular exercise
  • stop smoking
  • getting enough good sleep
  • avoiding stress and things that trigger your hot flushes
  • looking after your mental health
  • eating a wide variety of foods
  • drink more fluids, and less caffeine and alcohol
  • and so on.

We believe that while these general rules may be helpful, the use of correctly prescribed Bio-Identical HRT will be your best source of relief.  Plus it will allow the other items on this list to happen.
